The United States Intervention In Grenada
The United States Intervention In Grenada
In 1983, the U.S.A intervened in Grenada to stop he revolution which begun in 1979. At the beginning of the revolution, the prime minister of Grenada Sir Eric Matthew Gairy was overthrown by Maurice Bishop and Bernard Coard, along with several men. Some of the reasons for the over throw of Gairy were; the high rates of unemployment in the country, poor health care system ( in availability and inaccessibility of service) a series of demonstrations and strike by health care workers, police men and women, teacher and other civil servants, poor infrastructure in the country and the brutal attacks on members of the public by Gairy's personal ' hench men'. After the overthrow of Gairy, there was a fall out between bishop and Coard who assumed Joint leadership of Grenada. Coard and his men subsequently executes bishop and some of his closest followers on a forth within the city. Consequently the U.S.A intervened in Grenada to stop the spread of socialism, as a favour to members of the O.E.C.S and to rescue American citizens who were in Grenada.
Firstly, the United States became deeply concerned that Grenada had formed close ties with Cuba, which came about with the help of Maurice Bishop, one of the leaders in Grenada at the time. Cuba was a communist or socialist country, meaning Cuba was a equal society. This meant that Individuals did not own land, factories, or machinery. Instead, the government or the whole community owns these things as everyone is supposed to share the wealth that they create. With that being the case, the United States of America was so concerned. This was because the United states Believes that it is their Doctrine to expand. This was because they feared being colonized again by the By the United Kingdom so they decided to expand and gain more colonies to become more massive and powerful so that she would not be colonized again. The united States anted to expand in the western hemisphere and started gaining interest in islands such as Barbados, Jamaica , Grenada and especially Cuba. To acquire cuba where production was booming, America was strategic by turning Cuba against her other country Spain and helping Cuba gain freedom from Spain. However later on, Cuba had formed close ties with U.S.S.R who was a Socialist country, the United States Of America furious as they they did not want any other country or colony interfering with business in the Western hemisphere. Russia helped Cuba gain freedom from America and America was now unable to control Cuba and expand. Since Grenada geographically located in the western hemisphere was forming close ties with Cuba who recently became a socialist country. The united states wanted to stop this chain as they saw that Grenada's close interaction would mean that Grenada would most likely go the socialist way instead of being a country of democracy. The United States of America did want this to happen as socialism posed the problem of them being unable to own or acquire any lands and natural resources that belongs to any socialist country. To expand more lands would need to be acquired, and the dots between the socialist countries was starting to connect with islands that the United States had interest in, so the United States decided to intervene and stop this spread.
In addition to the fear of the spread of socialism , it was requested by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States(O.E.C.S) and the Prime Ministers of Bermuda that the United States of America should intervene in Grenada to stop the spread of socialism. This was because if socialism was ever to spread throughout the western hemisphere, all lands and anything of value belonging to the country will now be owned by the government and citizens. This will not profit investors who had bought lands in those islands as all ownership will belong to the people and to the government. Stopping Grenada from becoming a socialist country will stop the spread of socialism because if it ever was to happen, other citizens from the neighboring islands are watching and they would most likely want their country to be a socialist country for the benefits that came with it.
Thirdly, the United States intervened in Grenada because they thought that Cuba was building a naval base in Grenada. A naval base is where warships are docked. Since Maurice Bishop had form close ties with Cuba, they sent Cuban engineers to help with building an international airport for Grenada. Building this airport in Grenada had the United States Of America alarmed because, they thought it was a naval base for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R) which meant that they would take full control of what comes in and out of Grenada. This meant that the United States would not be able to take control and expand in Grenada, since the U.S.S.R would be in charge.
Lastly, the United States intervened in Grenada because of the Grenada’s revolution. At the time Citizens of the United States was studying at the St. George’s University in Grenada. Due to the Grenada’s revolution a lot of violence, house arrest and curfew was happening because of the poor conditions that existed in Grenada at the time ………The rate of unemployment was high, poor health care and education system, low wages in all sector, high taxes and poor infrastructure. However, when the news of Maurice Bishop’s death had spread, the United states intervened to rescued its citizens since the main leader had died and things was getting out of control. Although the United States wanted to rescue and protect their citizens from the chaos that was happening in Grenada at the time, they also used this rescue mission as an opportunity to stop the spread of communism.
Conclusively, the main reasons for the United States of America intervention in Grenada was to stop the spread of communism which was an obstacle for the united States to fulfil its Doctrine; Expansionism, especially throughout the western hemisphere.
